How to install cage nuts correctly
Installation succeeds when the cage and mounting hole match. Before insertion, check sharp edges, paint build-up and deformations in the profile. When working on control cabinets and electrical equipment, disconnect the system from the power supply.
Step by step
- Check the hole: Compare its shape, size and sheet thickness with the intended cage nut.
- Position the cage: Insert one side of the spring into the square hole.
- Engage: Carefully press the cage in until the second side sits behind the sheet. Do not tilt it by force.
- Align the nut: Position the square nut centrally beneath the hole.
- Start the screw: Engage the screw and nut by hand first. Tighten only afterwards with a suitable tool.
- Check the connection: Check the cage position, screw head and clamping length.
Typical installation errors
- A hole that is too large allows the cage to tilt or move.
- A hole that is too small damages the spring during insertion.
- A screw started at an angle can damage the thread.
- Excessive torque deforms thin sheets or the cage.
The permitted tightening torque depends on the cage nut, screw, material and construction. If no specification is available, agree the value with the manufacturer or technical documentation.
