Cage Nuts FAQ

Here you will find the most important questions about selecting, installing and sourcing cage nuts. Hole size, sheet thickness and thread are decisive for a specific assignment.

What is a cage nut?

A cage nut is a square nut in a spring-steel cage. The cage is inserted into a mounting hole and holds the nut in the correct position so that the screw can be inserted from the accessible side.

Is a cage nut the same as a box nut?

In technical everyday use, the terms are often used for the same design. What matters is the actual cage geometry, hole size and internal thread.

Which cage nut fits my 19-inch rack?

That depends on the hole shape and size of the profile rail and on the thread. Metric and imperial versions cannot be exchanged without checking. A photo of the rail or a sample makes selection easier.

Can cage nuts be reused?

Removal is generally possible. Before reuse, the spring, cage and thread must be checked for deformation and damage. For safety-relevant connections, the equipment or design manufacturer’s specification is decisive.

Which standard describes cage nuts?

Depending on the design, standards such as DIN 557 may be used for the square nut. The complete cage design, spring geometry and suitability for a particular profile must also be checked against the technical data.

Does Schütt supply cage nuts as a kit?

Yes. Cage nuts can be assembled, counted and packaged with screws, washers and other parts according to a bill of materials. Labels, inserts, assembly instructions and printing can be added on request.

What information does Schütt need for an enquiry?

Useful information includes thread size, hole size, sheet thickness, material or corrosion requirements, quantity and desired delivery contents. A drawing, photo or sample can speed up the assessment.

Have you got the data ready? Send it through our product enquiry. We can also check a sample if required.
