Cage nuts: sizes, threads and materials

The right cage nut is determined by more than its thread size. For a secure connection, the mounting hole, sheet thickness, cage geometry and environment must match. The following information is normally enough to narrow down a design.

Thread and screw

The internal thread must match the existing screw and the required clamping length. Metric threads such as M5 or M6 are common; imperial threads are used in some rack and imported systems. Screw length, head and drive should be matched to the component and available installation space.

Mounting hole and sheet thickness

The cage spring is designed for a specific hole size and range of sheet thicknesses. A hole that is too small can damage the cage, while a hole that is too large causes play or poor retention. For bent profiles, also check that the cage can fully engage.

Material and surface

For dry indoor areas, steel versions with surface protection are often used. Stainless steel may be suitable in damp, chemically exposed or corrosive environments. Selection depends on the location, contact with other materials and your design requirements.
